Not very good for you though and especially harmful for either insects and aquatic life:

"Its active ingredient is Metofluthrin, a chemical created in 2005 by Sumitomo Chemical Co. and quickly approved by the Environmental Protection Agency in 2006. During initial testing the odorless chemical compound was found to be dangerous to dogs, rats and rabbits, according to naturalpestrepellents.com. When frequently exposed to Metofluthrin the rats were more likely to develop cancer.

...Thermacell advises avoiding using the repellent around beehives and claims “our mosquito products are also most often used in the evening when bees are returning to their nest (also true of butterflies and other foraging insects).”

This reasoning is not a very convincing defense, especially when you consider that night-loving moths are in some respects even more significant pollinators than butterflies. There are 160,000 species of moths, compared to 18,000 species of butterflies."

Thanks for this! If you can link me to your sources that would be helpful. Lots of repellent systems from Permethrin, Picardin, and DEET are all harmful to surrounding wildlife and that's why they work. And, unfortunately, a lot of natural interventions are also toxic to domestic pets.

I'm from the Philippines and have experienced almost every mosquito-related illness known to man except Malaria and they are all equally painful that I have wished to die so there are some cases where I'd like to prioritize comfort and potentially avoid experiencing those things again!

I am also aware that the dose is the poison and what causes cancer in rats does not perform the same way for humans.

I couldn't share a link because of the character limit... https://friendsofanimals.org/how-to-fend-off-mo...

I get the risk-reward tradeoff as my family is from the tropics and many of them have gotten dengue, chikungunya, etc... and other diseases that folks from non-tropical climates have never heard of.

Also EPA says it is “likely to be carcinogenic to humans”. https://www3.epa.gov/pesticides/chem_search/reg...

This the safest approach but doesn't work in wet tropical environments: https://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/2026/0...

I was able to backtrack the source you cited earlier and it lead to a couple of dead links and often anecdotal. The EPA study you cited also lists higher than average dosage via testing. I weigh 100KG and will likely not be around 1g of Methoflurin regularly when mosquitoes are not in season or around me at all. A standard Thermacell device uses about 45g of solution at a concentration of 5% methoflurine, every 12 hours, that's 2.25g, placed outdoors at a safe distance away from animals which based on the EPA study you cited which had animals ingest high doses of Methoflurin, is within the threshold of safety. It's more environmentally damaging to have an outdoor cat.

I typically use this device at camp when mosquitoes are present and that's about it. Camp is a situation where I'm surrounded by microplastics on the hour every hour as its often the safest and most comfortable option. I appreciate your concern, however, I do not share in it.
