This studio — in one of my favorite neighborhoods in Tokyo — is run by a delightful couple who teach you the basic skills needed to actually repair broken ceramics on your own. They provide a shopping list for what to pick up locally if you want to bring the tools home with you, too. I’ve successfully repaired a number of broken cups, vases, and bowls myself, which is an extremely satisfying return on investment.

“Japanese / n. / ɯɑːbɪ sɑːbɪ / wa-be sa-be. Imperfect and aged beauty; the aesthetics of impermanence and imperfection; a ‘dark, desolate sublimity’. Think, “Kintsugi" process of fixing pottery.”
