Thank you for sharing! I actually asked this rec because of your LOTR “Breaking of the Fellowship” scene hehe. I’ve never even heard of or seen this show before (so I definitely appreciate your explanation). I don’t watch anime, but I have a friend who does and he recently rec’d Vinland Saga to me. Have you seen that? Is there something else you would rec I start out with? I think this quote about the Grim Reaper, trying to cheating death, ultimately being doomed by the narrative, and then “haunting” the characters is such an interesting plot tool. It’s a device used across multiple media, but as I read your description, Anakin Skywalker and Padame Amidala come to mind. There are countless other examples, but it’s an eye opening reminder that anyone can die at any time, regardless if we are ready for the “Grim Reaper to come”.

(1/?) Unfortunately I feel like anime is one of the few subjects that I'm not adequately able to give great recommendations for since my specific interest is EXCEPTIONALLY NARROW. I can articulate exactly what I like and why I like a show but it's mostly just...aura based? For example, 75% of anime I like watching is just Gundam. But it's like Star Wars as a franchise for me, there's some really good stuff, there's some really mediocre stuff, and there's some REALLY BAD stuff.

(2/?) I think the easiest way is to start with a genre that interests you and branch from there or probably post another request specifically about anime lol. Vinland Saga is a very good show but it's just not for me. I have a ton of friends who love it too but they like it because they're super into the Dan Carlin history podcasts and it tickles that part of their brain. There are some generally agreed upon shows that are good jumping off points like One Punch Man, Death Note, Full Metal Alchemist, and you can find a million and a half lists on the internet with the same top 10 recommendations. That said, if I had to make SPECIFIC recommendations that's not just the usual lists, I always recommend one-off series because there's no point in suggesting a show that's more than two seasons long if you don't even know if it's something you're going to commit to.

(3/?) Here's my top recs in a semi-ranked order: 1. The Vision of Escaflowne. 26 episodes. It's got a great blend of scifi, fantasy, romance, action. Fate and destiny are some of my favorite topics in fiction period and this has a lot of that. An ordinary high school girl gets transported to a faraway land and has to find a way back and dodge the threads of fate that entwine the universe. My personal favorite. 2. Neon Genesis Evangelion. 26 episodes. I wrote a whole rec for this and even though I love this show, I'm always scared to suggest it because one it really is like the Twin Peaks of anime. It requires so much reading between the lines and at times it feels completely hostile to newcomers. But if you have the time and patience there's a lot to reward you. It's really best supplemented by the movie and the tetralogy remake/sequel movies which can feel like asking a lot. Also not great for reopening deep traumatic psychological wounds.

(4/?) 3. Ouran High School Host Club. 26 episodes. Romance. Slice of life. It's both a high school anime and a parody of the exact kind of show it is. Very warm and sweet. Appeals to both guys and girls. Shockingly aged well considering it came out in 2006 and handles most of social topics with grace and care. 4. One Punch Man (Season 1, 12 episodes) I think season 1 is well contained enough where it whets your appetite and if you're interested you can see if you want to explore the other seasons. It's an action and character drama but also a parody of those same shows. Very funny and heartwarming. Great inversion of the chosen one trope.
