My partner & I talk about this ALL the time, especially in Charlotte with how much commercialization has taken over. You can still find spaces with community & warmth but you have to really work to find them, which I feel shouldn’t be the case. I love where we live but I get frustrated with things like this. The city has changed so much in the last few years & you can really feel it in the areas that used to be crawling with people just hanging out (RIP to much of Plaza). Community crumbling in the face of sterile industrial spaces with hard edges & blonde veneer counters. I hate to see it but it makes me lean into the handful of spots that truly feel inviting. Here’s hoping we start to see more of that again 🤞

And what's staggering is the rise in cost of housing in places like NoDa and Plaza. All these people are trying to move in to get a taste of what's left only driving up commercial housing demand...

I think it's why I viscerally hate South End/Lower Sound End (Sorry I'm not calling that shit LoSo).

Yes! Exactly, it’s a viscous cycle. & agreeeed LoSo just brings to mind Gretchen Weiners trying to make “fetch” happen. We’re on the west side & theyre trying to rebrand the neighborhood as Lower Tuck, & I can’t, the jokes write themselves people 💀 but this all ties into your bigger point of diminishing third spaces, especially in cities like Charlotte where there’s still a small amount of green space within the city that could, and should, be turned into things like parks for reprieve from the isolation of condo life. I think this must be true for so many other cities of this size that have experienced massive growth in a relatively short amount of time. We don’t need trendy new names for historic communities, just a chance for those communities to continue thriving by not eliminating community spaces. I’ll get on my soapbox but essentially, agreed!

A good read on this topic, the book “Finding Your Third Place” - https://www.nprillinois.org/arts-life/2024-10-0...

Mexico has got it going on in this respect. Plenty of park spaces, open air markets, squares, and good weather to actually enjoy it.

This is exactly the kind of answer that made me want to write about the topic in the first place. In some ways the most frustrating/interesting part is that genuine third spaces are often replaced by places that borrow community's visual language while removing all of the conditions that allow community to form. Nailed it with retail stores cosplaying as third spaces. Banger rec/input as always.
