This is not advertised at all on Google Maps but I like using MyMaps to plan trips since it gives you more granularity than the default saved lists. You can create layers to group activities by type or by day or however you want to organize. You can view all locations of a layer so you can plan routing based on proximity. It's a bit clunky to use but once you get used to the interface it's a very versatile tool.

Understandable, it's not very intuitive. First select the layer you want to add a location to. The layer will have a blue highlight accent on the left side. Then search for the location and click on the placard. There will be a (+ Add to map) button on the bottom left corner and it will then pin it to the layer.
Clunky as hell, useful as hell. If my MyMaps lists ever disappear like my iTunes playlists did in 2007 god help me.

“an excellent tool for planning any trip, near or far. my family used one for a trip we took together, so that everyone could add things we wanted to do and we could see where exactly everything was in relation to each other and the places we'd be stopping/staying. each person can use a different pin color, or you can change the color/icon of each pin to easily distinguish a restaurant from a museu”
