I was gifted vintage Olivetti Valentine from a suitor and have lugged it all over the world; cracking it here and there along the way. Letting it get a little beat up makes it more of a tool and less a collector’s item. I really do think a typewriter is the perfect haptic interface—faster than handwriting but less distracting than laptop. The physical experience of typing is quite pleasing, so it’s a good thing to write with when I’m feeling stuck and not enjoying the process. Typing is usually the second part of my drafting process, the first is writing longhand, then transcribing those notes into type written pages and then transcribing that into my computer, usually a GoogleDoc. Retyping your work is the best way to fill into the revision process of by the time I’ve gotten things into the computer it’s already a third draft.
It’s a bit silly and pretentious but maybe you are too 😘
