This might be a long shot but here goes ... We are coming up on the 70th anniversary of Duke Ellington's groundbreaking performance at the Newport Jazz Festival. My grandmother played a critical part in that moment and featured on the back of the album. I'd like to write a essay about her life in connection with the event and how it shaped her. Any thoughts on particular outlets for which this could be a good fit?

Although it is crazy competitive, there is so much info online about how to write a good Modern Love essay. I used all that info, got rejected, but my piece got accepted somewhere else. It was an obscure literary journal called “Hobart’s” but I was still happy it got published there because other writers I admire (like Roxanne Gay) had also had their work published in it. That is another tip- read bios of writers you like to see where they’ve been published. Good luck!
