Looking for a sewing machine that can handle a wide range of projects, is easy to store in a cabinet, and easy to troubleshoot (or maybe never jams etc). Would love a buy-it-for-life option.

Janome HD1000BE HD1000 Black Edition Sewing Machine: All steel parts and no computerized parts. I wanted the Bernina 1008, but couldn’t find it second hand and found this similar option instead. I’ve used it on delicate clothing to denim jeans and home projects as well. Just got it cleaned and serviced and the shopkeeper agreed that it was a good machine, esp for the price.

BERNINA 1008: This machine is a versatile workhorse, and a perfect non-industrial option for an avid sewer. Not currently available from the manufacturer, but look for it secondhand (that's how I got mine) OR look for these key components in a different secondhand machine.

Bernette Academy b05: Budget version in the same vein: way less frills, bells, and whistles but a super solid all-purpose machine. 100% mechanical so it’s easy to fix, super durable, and can sew through heavy duty materials.

Bernette b38: Pro in the sewing industry reporting in: the Bernette b38 is your guy. Lots of super cool doo dads that make it easier to sew for beginners (auto thread cutter, auto back stitch, auto needle lowering - all a fancy way of saying you hit a couple buttons and it sews for you). I also find it kind of course corrects when you’re sewing so you sew straighter??? Shockingly light so you can cover it and shove it in a closet when you’re done. Also, bernettes are super durable and last a solid epoch.

Used Husqvarna Sewing Machine: You can find some DEALS if you’re willing to hunt through EBay/offerup/your local FB Marketplace. I have this model of Viking sewing machine and she hasn’t ever let me down. The company that makes them also makes chainsaws, so they’re known for being tough. Great preset stitches, and I think this is one of their last pre-computerized models, so it’s easier to get repaired. Also, YouTube is full of tutorials if you ever need to troubleshoot.

Vintage sewing machine: I was wary of buying a new sewing machine that might glitch and crap out on me. Then I happened upon a vintage machine for less than $100 at a creative reuse shop and surprised myself and bought it on the spot. The "love you" label affixed to the top very likely had something to do with it — it felt like a little message from the universe. I love feeling connected to its original owner as I sew.
