Taking risks is how we step outside of our comfort zone. But for those of us who are risk averse, it’s incredibly overwhelming and scary. The gap looks like fear of failure, looking stupid or foolish, getting hurt, etc. But on the other side of the gap is an incredibly fulfilling life. So how do we balance our inherent needs for safety and security with risk taking? Calculated risks. For example: I often admired people’s clothing or style or even their smile. And I’d watch them walk by and wish I’d said something. So I tried small quick compliments in passing. “I love your look!” “Obsessed with those shoes!” “Your hair is such a lovely color” I knew it would never be foolish to be kind to people, so that minimized risk. And it’s lead me to some incredible conversations with people.
Another type of calculated risk is attending a community event. A class, a show, a pop up shopping experience, whatever…and go solo. It’s easy to find people with common interests if you meet them while experiencing those interests.
The more small risks you take, the more you trust yourself to try bigger things! “What’s holding me back from trying this new thing?” “What is the absolute worst that could happen from trying this?” “Can I survive the absolute worst thing?” “What kind of support do I want/need while I try this new thing”
Stay curious and respect your brain and body’s needs for security and familiarity. You have a pretty solid track record for navigating new and hard things so far in life, so I think you’ll do great :)
