Road trip to the Hudson Valley Pottery Tour: The third weekend in October, six ceramic artists open their incredible studios. These are your favorite potter’s favorite potters. Each artist has invited guests, and it’s generally peak leaf peeping. It’s possible to see all six studios in one day, but if you want to shop, have a leisurely lunch and explore, make it a weekend. 2026 is the 10th year of the tour and has a fantastic line up. The work spans from wood fired to 3d printed. All within about 2 hours of NYC. Host studios: Doug Peltzman, Kathy Erteman, Tim Rowan, Jeff Shapiro, Anat Shiftan, Bryan Czibesz.

Clinton Pottery Mug: Made in a small studio in my rural town, every person who has ever lived here owns at least one. It holds a PINT of coffee, and is perfectly balanced and ergonomic. The maker’s thumbprint at the top of the handle is the perfect grip. Comes in tons of colors! Can’t explain why it’s the platonic ideal of a mug, you just have to experience.
