Figure out your barriers
•••
I’ve been through many a workout era and some have been wonderful and joyful and others have been a slog. Even the workouts I have loved are sometimes hard and easy to dread. (Especially in the beginning when it’s not a habit yet.) It really helps to figure out what your barriers are. For me, environment is huge. If it feels like an icky dungeon, I am much less likely to motivate. It has to feel pleasing to me. Also, commute and parking. My best eras have been when I can walk somewhere, or I can drive and not worry about traffic/parking. I don’t want more stress! Barriers for arrival must be low! I also really like working out somewhere that doesn’t feel sceney or full of influencers. I do Pilates now and most of the other ppl are older women and I love it. Zero competitive vibes. Another big help for me is to NOT be overly goal oriented. My only job is to show up. Do I want to get stronger? Yes. But I don’t focus on the goal too much. Some days I have a lot of energy to give and other days, I don’t. When my only job is to show up, I’m less likely to get into stupid mind games with myself.

Peloton
•••
I fear I must concede that peloton really changed my life, fitness-wise. I find their programming accessible to a huge range of people since they have so many types of workouts, a lot of diverse instructors available with different personalities and expertise, and they cater to people who need really structured programs or people who want more flexibility or autonomy in their workouts. Shoutout to Adrian, Callie and JJ!!!

Joe Wicks Bodycoach Beginner Hiit Exercises
•••
These are the only workouts I found that I could stick to as you don’t need any equipment, save for a mat. Joe is really positive and encouraging! Low effort but high reward. Also I do notice a change in my mood after doing these workouts.

The best workout…
•••
…is the one that you actually enjoy and will keep doing for a sustained period, full stop. Swimming? Walking? Dancing? Sprinting? Biking? Whatever, without judgement or shame, is a good place to start to build a pleasurable habit in my non-expert opinion. Here’s a Felix Gonzalez-Torres go-go dancer piece for inspiration.

recipe for being a morning p...
range by kara duval

i found this rec on Rec League and WOW. to think that this little community of people has already guided me to something that feels so integral to my wellness. i crave working out now (who among us???) when i know it’s going to be a range class. every single one leaves me feeling regulated and strong, energized and at peace. kara is such a calming presence. i seriously cannot recommend enough. sometimes i run out of time and do these in the evenings, but it’s always a special treat when i manage to squeeze it in in the morning. she has tons of free classes (“open range”) you can try to get a sense of the vibe. do NOT turn your nose up at jitterbug based on the description. just try it. there’s no way you don’t love it.
