I think this is an extremely satisfying film, and I’ve wondered if it would have had more of a lasting cultural impact if it was a little edgier (it’s rated PG). The performances and screenplay are delightful, but the entire premise succeeds because of what a flippin’ competent song Adam Schlesinger (RIP) wrote.

“The song from That Thing You Do! gets stuck in my head constantly, but I don't mind when it does because I simply love this movie.”

“This movie was an instant favorite for me when it came out. The soundtrack is amazing, Liv Tyler is a sensation as always, so many quotable lines, and the whole band is so dreamy. Gah I love this one.”

“A light, breezy movie written and directed by Tom Hanks, about a sixties band that briefly makes it big when their fill-in drummer impulsively speeds up their ballad at a show and turns it into a pop sensation. Young Steve Zahn is particularly good in this, and Adam Schlesinger (RIP) wrote a pitch-perfect title track.”
