Fernweh translates to far-pain or farsickness, but colloquially refers to a deep, often melancholic longing for distant places, new experiences, or to escape everyday life. It is the opposite of Heimweh (homesickness). Similar to the, also German, wanderlust — but without all of the baggage that term has picked up over the years.

There used to be a gallery in Chicago called fernwey and I wonder if it was a play on this word ("y" instead of "h" at then end). Either way, its nice, ty!

Oh I wonder! The pronunciation is basically fern-vay so that part tracks.
