Leviathan by Mastodon (2004)
Recommended by Steven Weill
Taking a bold swing with their second album, Atlanta prog metal (now) legends hit us with a concept album based on... Herman Melville's iconic 1851 novel Moby Dick???
Just look at this tracklist:
Blood and Thunder
I Am Ahab
Seabeast
Island
Iron Tusk
Megalodon
Naked Burn
Aqua Dementia
Hearts Alive
Joseph Merrick
You can tell this is peak without even listening to it. The album explores themes of obsession, revenge, and nature's fury, with lyrics, heavy riffs, and chaotic energy capturing the story of Captain Ahab's vendetta against the white whale. So good.

RIP Brent Hinds 💔

Ugh terrible. So talented and such a shame to come so shortly after leaving the band and that drama.
