Jeanne Dielman, 23 Commerce Quay, 1080 Brussels (1975)
A study of how any routine becomes architecture in time. Chantal Akerman makes cooking, cleaning, waiting, serving, and moving through rooms feel simultaneously stabilizing and imprisoning. I'm sure the sentiment wouldn't be relatable to anyone... The film is profoundly interested in the hidden labor that allows ordinary life to appear orderly. But alsowhat happens when one tiny disruption exposes how precarious that order always was.

“It's a 3.5 hour long movie that's got a long sequence that's just watching Delphine Seyrig make a meatloaf, yet somehow it's riveting the entire time. The first time I watched this, I watched it on 1.5x speed, and that was a total disservice to the film; do not do this.”
