About three lifetimes and five years ago I went to the home of an acquaintance who had called all hands on deck to help with fall planting and the making of garden beds in their front yard shortly after the birth of their daughter. I love those hippy vibes of the commune and was all in. They had lots of food to feed us, but we brought more because that is the vibe and style we bring to the occasion. I was given one of their Hori Horis to use for the task and it blew my actual mind. It made the whole thing easy which is saying something if you’ve ever dealt with crabgrass in the Kentucky ground. I walked away knowing I had to have one, but managed to forget about it until last week after wrestling with rhizomes under my Holly tree with a spade for far too long (though I have done enough squatting now that I apparently will live forever).
So, if you need to remove something by the root, get a Hori Hori. Here are Bob Vila’s recommendations with budget options for all of us (I wanted a pretty traditional one with a leather sheath, but it’s Fiskars time around these parts. I still gotta eat).
