I love writing all sorts of things and have had hundreds of journals in my long life. Moleskines big and small, lined and unlined, and those affordable little three packs of cahiers in different colors. Leuchtturm1917 notebooks I just knew would change my life. Handbound leather, handmade rice paper. I’ve also had running page journals on my computer - Google Sheets, a word doc. Sometimes I’d be consistent with one or both, sometimes a month or two would pass before a suitable to write about situation would present itself and I ran back to my journal - always feeling I probably should explain my absence to my old friend.
Last month, I was with friends and we decided to walk up the street through the Pride Festival with our end destination being a little twirl around Carmichael’s Books, our local bookshop here in Louisville. My bestie made a b-line for the journals and said she was looking for a journal, a spiral decomposition book. She is the font of most of the best ideas in my life and I didn’t know she was into spiral journals. I was also in the market for a new paper journal, because when my writing falls fallow I always have to begin again, this time with new pens. I decided to try a spiral and now my life is changed.
I have written three pages every morning since that day and while that kind of consistency may not impress anyone else, I’ve got to tell you, it has been incredibly enormous for me. Maybe it’s the texture of the brown non glossy cover, maybe it’s the comfort of the regular old notebook paper. Maybe it’s because I have an incredible pen collection with different feels and colors that I can choose from or let choose me. Whatever the case. I recommend these spiral notebooks with my outside voice. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

“This is a habit that I wish I started earlier in life, but luckily one that was extremely encouraged in my MFA program. I re-rec’d this specifically because you must use a spiral bound notebook that is not overly precious. If it’s too beautiful a notebook, you may not allow yourself to get messy.”
