poesia: Great non-typical Italian food. No pizza or lasagna. Rather more of a regional menu. Sit on the front terrace and people watch in the Castro. Or the back patio. Or inside and sneak peeks at whatever Italian movie they’re screening on the wall.

During the day, Poesía Cafe is downstairs for Italian baked goods, sandwiches, and beverages.

verjus: had a wonderful meal seated in the window. the food is french in a way that is designed to be enjoyable and not alienating in the process. very knowledgeable and kind staff. watched mackenzie (ex-bezos) walk by on a date. she looked really happy.

Black Bird Bookstore & Cafe: Good coffee and a good book are hard to beat. Black Bird Bookstore and Cafe keeps it simple: sit outside, read a while, then wander across to Hook Fish CO for catch of the day tacos or over to Banh Mi Crunch for a sandwich.

Haus Coffee (Mission District, SF): They seem to revere silent enjoyment here if that suits your vibe. Lots of books being read and laptops being typed upon, etc. A nice little menu of toasts, too.

L'Ardoise Bistro: Every time I go to SF I draw a total blank for food & bev. Idk why! It seems like exactly the place you'd find a strong coffee and Erewhon combo plate, alas! I can never find this. My hack is that I just go to any old French restaurant and order a Salad Niçoise and a cappuccino. Hits every time!
