Gosford Park : Watching Gosford Park is the answer to many of life's small-scale problems. Were you unsatisfied by the latest Knives Out and/or much of Downton Abbey? Do you miss Maggie Smith? Are you someone who prefers rain but you live in a drought-prone region? Etc.

Gosford Park is Robert Altman for people who like Agatha Christie via Jean Renoir but actually none of that matters because it's just a great movie with a truly epic cast. 2001 was an amazing year for movies and I rewatch lots of those films but I find many people slept on this one, perhaps because its smooth edges felt out of step with the times. It's been my honor over the years to squeal at anybody who tells me they've never seen it. Please enjoy.

The Princess Diaries: The Princess Diaries is another 2001 favorite movie of mine (but dare I say, I think I like the second one better 😯).

Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (2001): The Philosopher’s Stone isn’t my favorite movie from the Harry Potter franchise, but in terms of the Wizarding World, I think it does a great job with setting the foundation for some of the more whimsical elements. Maybe this is all my nostalgia talking, but I really love Harry Potter. While it does have some poor visual effects, it is also exciting to watch the movies evolve, get darker, and more complex.

Mulholland Drive: David Lynch’s masterpiece is rich enough to watch every year for the rest of your life. It will work it’s way into your subconscious and upend how you consume other pieces of media.

Amélie: Amélie understands that delight is often hiding in plain sight. It's less a movie than an invitation to notice the world a little differently, with Audrey Tautou at its heart.

Ocean's Eleven: Literally just took my kids to see this in the theater last weekend. (Runner-up: Josie and the Pussycats.)
