actively increasing your surface area for luck to hit you

The only note on this sentiment is that sometimes increasing your surface area does also increase the availability for a direct hit - i.e., being misunderstood, encountering rudeness, meeting people who are in the middle of their own personal forest, and can't see through the trees / get out of it. That doesn't mean that increasing surface area isn't a worthy cause, but it certainly comes with risk that one must be willing to take, and roll with the punches no matter what happens.
