The Hot Toddy is a centuries-old warm cocktail with roots tracing back to India, where a fermented palm sap drink called 'tadi' is believed to have inspired its name.
The version we know today was shaped by British influence, evolving into a simple, restorative combination of hot water, citrus, sweetener, and spirits. This classic build uses brown liquor—most often whiskey, brandy, or rum—sweetened with honey and brightened by fresh lemon juice, then diluted with hot water.
The result is a gently warming drink where the honey softens the alcohol’s edge, lemon provides lift and acidity, and the spirit brings depth and comfort.
Traditionally garnished with warming spices like cinnamon or star anise, the Hot Toddy is less about precision and more about flexibility, intended to be customized to taste and enjoyed slowly as a soothing, aromatic winter drink.
