Pee Wees Big Adventure (1985)
On oxley street in Pasadena!
I loved Pee Wee Herman growing up here and it only occurred to me much later, when the HBO doc was coming out, that Big Adventure is actually an LA movie. Pee we exists in a hyper saturated suburban playground and hangs out at the Santa Monica promenade much like I did at the time. Childhood itself is the experience of your mind as the mind of all life which is a fantasy wonderfully reinforced in Hollywood. “childhood is the sleep of reason” -Rousseau. LA is similarly a sleep of reason.

Pee-wee's Big Adventure

“If you know me (or follow me on here) you know how much I love Peewee Herman. Peewee's Big Adventure is Tim Burton's first movie with an incredible score by none other than Oingo Boingo's own Danny Elfman - also his first movie!!! Every visual in this movie is perfect and hilarious and I made two rec league collections that reflect the world of Peewee. I even have a Peewee's Big Adventure tattoo!!”

“Kooky, good time with Paul Reuben's Pee-Wee, Burton behind the camera, and Danny Elfman playing the music. Fun cameo with Cassandra Peterson (of Elvira fame and fellow Groundling chum to Paul Reubens and Diane Salinger, who plays Simone). And who can forget the Large Marge scene, famous for distressing (at least!) two generations of children?”
