Sit down, I’m about to make your Rec League experience sombre for a minute.
Just over a month ago, my remarkable Grandma Lynn passed away after a rapid decline from cancer. I was (and still am) very close with my grandmother, our communication style will just be a little different going forward.
The grey, rainy August day that she passed was difficult but I felt a sort of relief and freedom for her. When I got home, I did something that I kind of anticipated I would do for a few years now, which is get into bed and play Kintsugi by Lana Del Rey (probably my favorite artist and songwriter). The song has always struck me, as I do get caught up in worrying about how quickly time is slipping, but these lyrics have taken on new meaning:
We've only got hours
And I just can't stop cryin' 'cause all of the ways
When you see someone dyin', you see all your days
Flash in front of you
And you think about who would be with you
I used to connect with these lyrics with an imagined sort of grief, picturing being by the hospital bed as a loved one is dying, but now that I’ve lived through it, the song strikes a different chord.
All of this to say, whether you are just dwelling on the short and special amount of time we have with each other or if you’re missing someone you’ve lost, I recommend putting this song on and giving a little nod up to the skies! I’m sure Grandma Lynn was listening and humming along from the greater beyond 🫂💙
