Big Food has done unspeakable harm to melons! I thought I didn’t like 'em at all, but really, I had only ever encountered the industrially farmed honeydew and cantaloupe that are deposited in eerily precise cubes into pre-chopped "fruit salads" that are brought from here to there on 18-wheeler trucks. It's kind of wild to think that those sad simulacra have so dominated the market that it took me decades to recognize that my aversion was not to the fruit itself but to bad versions of it. I finally tried the good stuff when I went to a not very gluten-friendly restaurant with my gluten-free friend. One of the few safe options was a melon salad, and it was a revelation! I haven't looked back! Weiser Family Farms grows so many unique varieties but I keep coming back to the Bonny because it has so much character. It is sweet but not cloying or one-note because there's a tangy, citrusy note, too. Moral of story: revisit your childhood food aversions through high-quality exposure therapy and you might gain a new fave!
