I read this a long time ago and you’ve made me want to reread it!

Totally one of those perennial books of life to orbit around and reread!

I read this last year and it has led to numerous rabbit holes that have delightfully taken up a lot of my time.

Also a mega fan! I wrote my junior seminar paper on him in college and got some raised eyebrows from my peers (so unhip, in their eyes) but affirmation from my prof. He was brilliant.

HAHA I completely relate to the lifetime raised eyebrows for this, but we gotta let the soft animal of our bodies love what they love!

Two years ago I drove to Greensboro, VT (where it’s set, and where he’s buried!). I loved seeing the counterpoint to his western landscapes

That’s amazing. Have you read big rock candy mountain?
Sam
@sam_f_alviani
yes, so good! I think about his pet weasel all the time lol

Have you read any others you love? Those are the only three I’ve read
Sam
@sam_f_alviani
Those are my top three, then comes Spectator Bird — it’s different totally and in setting but MAN the craft of that book stuck with me. I also read Mormon Country for book research and it was fascinating. Have you read any of his essays? I loved the essay he wrote for This is Dinosaur, he’s at the height of his environmental activism powers there if you’re looking to read something a little different from him.

“One of my lifetime top 5 books, every time I reread it earns it spot again. One of the great novels about the American West, and a beautifully written picture of what it is to live, love, and age.”

“It starts slow but by the end you’re in it with the characters. Also amazing is Crossing to Safety by Wallace Stegner”
