I LOVE not being on instagram/fb. Not thinking about it, not knowing what everyone is doing, not sharing what I’m doing, coming and going as I please. It’s the best!
Sandy Caribou
@salad_valet
It is the best and how it’s meant to be! We don’t need everyone in our business all of the time. Gatekeeping our personal stuff is the best.

Why deny yourself the joy of dropping a mega update bomb when hanging out with someone for the first time in a while
Sandy Caribou
@salad_valet
Yes exactly!! How novel, sharing BIG NEWS when you catch up with someone IRL

Omg yes. It’s so important to keep things sacred. It’s also much better imo to subscribe to this line of thinking rather than wanting to keep things private bc of evil eye, which is much more fear based. Protect things not because you’re scared, but because they’re sacred.
Sandy Caribou
@salad_valet
This is pure magic to me. Our lives are sacred, our stories are ours. Let’s be cautious yet generous about who we let in and what we share.

I didn’t share my pregnancy on socials, so it was a lot of fun to witness the surprise from acquaintances once she was born.

I am due later this month and the only people who know are those who I have told myself. I am feeling so darn powerful with my secrets. Can’t wait to announce I had a baby by showing up with a kid to something, the ultimate reveal.
Emily
@emilyg
Congrats!
Ryan
@ryanwells
Now I’m kinda wishing I had kept my kids a secret then dropped high school graduation montages out of nowhere! 🤣
Sandy Caribou
@salad_valet
Omg should I just not tell anyone i have a kid and then drop the graduation montage?? You’re giving me ideas!

yessss i love this. i aspire to be mysterious online yet i'm cursed with the compulsion to overshare. but i will say i've been practicing sharing less personal info and keeping it for the irl catch ups! plus the fact that meta is probably going to be using everything we post online to train their AI and steal all our IP is another reason to share less..

it's so much nicer finding out what my friends have been up to when i catch up on the phone or irl - i actually mute most of my friends on social media so i'm not seeing their life updates through my phone screen. it's so easy to make assumptions or judgments that way and so easy to feel like we have 'caught up' on someone's life just because we've seen a few highlights on their instagram? what happened to going for a coffee or dinner and having a good old fashioned gossip sesh!!!

@salad_valet
100% this!! My initial push to get rid of my IG was a mix of not wanting them to have my data, reaching a breaking point in hating the tech oligarchs having so much control over us and US politics, and not wanting to continue giving access to me and my life through a screen. It’s felt really healthy to not know as much and also, not have people and corporations know as much about me. Excited for old fashioned catchups for real! I went to my longtime friend’s bar this week (he bartends) and we hadn’t seen each other in… a decade? He met my husband for the first time! We talked about what we like about Chicago, how he ended up moving here a year and a half ago. It was sooooo real and sweet.

love that so much! when i deleted instagram for a month or two last year I started sending silly little weekly email updates to a few of my friends. just telling them about what media i'd been into that week (music, books, shows, films), then adding a few pics from my week. it was pretty cute.

that said, i did find i missed out on lots of social stuff because of my absence, so I eventually succumbed to its evil ways once again. mostly to keep up with the queer events going on in my city. it suckssss that we've become so solely reliant on these platforms as a way of promoting events though.

some of my friends who rely on social media presence for their work have had their accounts shut down recently, and have lost incomes as a result. i hate that we have become so dependent on it for our livelihoods and that the tech bros can dictate the types of people who are or aren't acceptable on their platforms. it's so icky.

anyway sorry for my rambling tangent, i have lots of feelings hehe

I quit Facebook and Instagram 5 years ago, and the joy I feel when I see people and ask them what the heck is NEW is electric!!! I love folks not knowing all of my business, AND the other way around!

Sandy Caribou
@salad_valet
This is brilliant! Five years off of the big social media apps is such a feat—i am deeply impressed. I love the thought of catching up with someone and sharing NEW news, having a connection about it. You are a beacon!

Could NOT agree more. And when people are like oh don’t you miss big life event stuff I’m like… I hear about p much everything in the group chat so don’t you worry :)
Sandy Caribou
@salad_valet

yes! if we are more than acquaintances, you and i already know the big life stuff happening! it's super fun running into folks i'm not the closest with out in the wild and giving them the big updates in real time. social media doesn't need to know it all.

Daniel Ieraci
@danielieraci

So real. I remember travelling overseas a few months back and taking tons of pictures (as you do), and for the first time in my life NOT posting them to IG, and then realising how strange that was given I was so used to posting them throughout my life.

Sandy Caribou
@salad_valet
Proud of you for not posting!

Being off social media is heaven & liberating. Filling real friends & fam in on good, exciting news, or any personal news is so much more rewarding in person. I’m over creating content for Mr. Zuckerberg, too. He gets my bare minimum.

Lulu Lefferts
@lululefferts
I am obsessed with keeping most personal details offline AND refusing to follow my friends. I found that I was less inclined to get in touch when I felt like I already knew “everything” that was happening in their lives. Instead I force myself to check in to get the goss.
Sandy Caribou
@salad_valet
That’s the way to do it!

Yep. I quit social media in 2013 - never regret it, and when I do, it's a passing thought.

Rachael

I used to share monthly videos on Instagram, then finally deleted Instagram. I text videos to my close circle and then we *gasp* chit chat!! It’s not just a like and comment in response. We have a convo. Incredible concept 😂 Now I’m pregnant and I LOVE the fact that only my faves will know.
Sandy Caribou
@salad_valet
I love that we both deleted Instagram! I just had a baby and same, only the people I wanted to know know about the experience. It’s so cool and liberating!! Congratulations, I’m excited for your journey!

Girl, yes. Living your life, without an audience, is next level.
Sandy Caribou
@salad_valet
I love the concept of living life without an audience (as a recovering theater kid, especially)
rips
@ripscreates

i agree with this 100% i at least try to give some pace and distance before making announcements, just so i have the privacy to process in my own time. when people start asking questions before i have answers because i literally have not had the time or energy to consider it, is just a mess waiting to happen. no ty.
