Literally, obsessed with keeping personal stuff to myself and those in my orbit (who I choose to share with). Sometimes, I’ll run into someone and they’ll ask how my PhD is going and I relish in the fact that I quit it at the end of 2022 and get to fill them in on that journey.
It’s cool to have a mystique. Not being on IG for over a year means those acquaintances from old jobs, people I met in line for bar bathrooms, and people from my past lives don’t keep tabs on me. This is what freedom looks like.

it feels so good
Yesssss
10000% YES!
yessss i love this. i aspire to be mysterious online yet i'm cursed with the compulsion to overshare. but i will say i've been practicing sharing less personal info and keeping it for the irl catch ups! plus the fact that meta is probably going to be using everything we post online to train their AI and steal all our IP is another reason to share less..
it's so much nicer finding out what my friends have been up to when i catch up on the phone or irl - i actually mute most of my friends on social media so i'm not seeing their life updates through my phone screen. it's so easy to make assumptions or judgments that way and so easy to feel like we have 'caught up' on someone's life just because we've seen a few highlights on their instagram? what happened to going for a coffee or dinner and having a good old fashioned gossip sesh!!!
love that so much! when i deleted instagram for a month or two last year I started sending silly little weekly email updates to a few of my friends. just telling them about what media i'd been into that week (music, books, shows, films), then adding a few pics from my week. it was pretty cute.
that said, i did find i missed out on lots of social stuff because of my absence, so I eventually succumbed to its evil ways once again. mostly to keep up with the queer events going on in my city. it suckssss that we've become so solely reliant on these platforms as a way of promoting events though.
some of my friends who rely on social media presence for their work have had their accounts shut down recently, and have lost incomes as a result. i hate that we have become so dependent on it for our livelihoods and that the tech bros can dictate the types of people who are or aren't acceptable on their platforms. it's so icky.
anyway sorry for my rambling tangent, i have lots of feelings hehe
I quit Facebook and Instagram 5 years ago, and the joy I feel when I see people and ask them what the heck is NEW is electric!!! I love folks not knowing all of my business, AND the other way around!
100% this!!
yes! if we are more than acquaintances, you and i already know the big life stuff happening! it's super fun running into folks i'm not the closest with out in the wild and giving them the big updates in real time. social media doesn't need to know it all.
So real. I remember travelling overseas a few months back and taking tons of pictures (as you do), and for the first time in my life NOT posting them to IG, and then realising how strange that was given I was so used to posting them throughout my life.
Being off social media is heaven & liberating. Filling real friends & fam in on good, exciting news, or any personal news is so much more rewarding in person. I’m over creating content for Mr. Zuckerberg, too. He gets my bare minimum.
Yep. I quit social media in 2013 - never regret it, and when I do, it's a passing thought.
i agree with this 100% i at least try to give some pace and distance before making announcements, just so i have the privacy to process in my own time. when people start asking questions before i have answers because i literally have not had the time or energy to consider it, is just a mess waiting to happen. no ty.
