Yes yes and! I find that by not shopping at Amazon and their affiliates I find more interesting, quality, and eco friendly or used things.

Absolutely!! In addition to making me push pause before I make a purchase, I’m also seeking out sellers and makers who run small businesses. Which feels extremely radical these days.

So glad to know others out there are doing this! It takes more time but in a way I enjoy having to seek out niche items at a hardware store/art store/etc.

Me too!! Also, I’ve been relying on my library for a majority of my media in recent years. Borrowing books, CDs, and DVDs. If I love something, I’ll purchase it for a friend or for myself directly from the artist or publisher. It feels good to break from the shopping / convenience loop.

I had no idea Amazon owned GoodReads! Bah! Deleting my account today.

@salad_valet
Yes!! It totally sucks! I track what books I’ve read on a spreadsheet now, feels oldschool

I've been using StoryGraph as an independent alternative. At least last I checked it was not evil...

@framberg
Library Thing is a lovely and afaik wholesome place to track what you’re reading and be in community with other readers. I’ve been a member since 2007.

StoryGraph is a great alternative to Goodreads, and honestly way better designed anyway

This resonates and may I also say - the Amazon website is ugly and hostile to its users. We're all used to it now but it's not nice! This may seem like a superficial concern but I think there's more to it + it adds to the pile of "and why."
Sandy Caribou
@salad_valet
It is SO ugly. Anytime I click a link to a product from a blog or rec and it takes me to Amazon, I am reminded by just how ugly it is. It looks and feels cheap.

Agreed! Which is one of the major reasons I never got sucked in. It’s so awful

Yes!! I quit last year and despite having a kid and needing to drive to most stores, I’ve found it to be completely fine! Better, even! I buy less junk, and find I enjoy shopping more.
Sandy Caribou
@salad_valet
I love that you’re enjoying being away from Amazon! Way to go. The less junk part is really the key to success here.

Even with kids! For some reason we were so nervous at first and once we canceled Prime we were like ‘mmm ok, could have done this 5 years earlier’ makes us covet things more and really think about our purchases. Plus anything to stay away from the people at the top benefitting from this.
Sandy Caribou
@salad_valet
Yes yes yes!! So proud of you for quitting with kids! I’m expecting my first and feeling good about not getting stuff from the big stores. We do have purchasing power!!!

Thanks for the pointer to tool libraries. Such a cool initiative for those of us curious to explore new tools. :)
Sandy Caribou
@salad_valet
Yes!! We have a big one in Chicago and also a lot of libraries (book libraries) have stuff you can borrow. It’s such a cool initiative to make us share things. Plus you don’t have to store that tool when you’re done using it

I’ve ordered two things from Amazon in the last ten years, and o rarely shop At Whole Foods. I really don’t understand why quitting is so difficult.
Sandy Caribou
@salad_valet
I think it’s the reliance / convenience loop. Which is impacted by how little time we seemingly have to make these purchases. Also, they make it so easy to just get the thing with one click! That’s what got me—i would remember i needed or wanted something, pull out my phone, and place the order without even pausing to think. And often, I’d toss extra stuff into my cart to get free shipping or “save money” on some deal.

I am trying to cut down on Amazon but cannot quite it entirely- we're in an unhealthy codependent relationship.
Sandy Caribou
@salad_valet
It’s hard to stop! A good way to dip your toes in is to take a month off and see how it changes your thinking around the habjt

if you're in the LA area, my friends started a company that's structured like Amazon but they source entirely from local vendors. it's called Gallop!
Sandy Caribou
@salad_valet
Such a great counter rec!! Thank you for sharing—we need something like Gallop in Chicago!

And please, for the love of God, please don't Amazon by DRONE😩. Its ruining my peace/life.

@salad_valet

This is great and I support you. I made my last purchase from Amazon in January of 2025 - canceled my membership, canceled my audible subscription too. I too live in an urban environment with many independent shops within walking distance, I have a car, I am single and financially stable. I am not disabled, I live alone. The mindset that I need this object brought to me by another person right now was really harmful to my mental health. First, I didn't need more stuff, second I don't want to be so spoiled that I can't go get the things I need myself and interact with the outside world and the other live humans in my community. It has really helped my mindset and my budget. So many free or indie community options instead. Thanks for starting/continuing this conversation.

“This is so hard to do. I’ve personally been slowly weaning off for a while now, but I can no longer justify putting any more money into Amazon.”
