Lucia Solis is absolutely a genius. She’s a former wine sommelier turned coffee expert, and in this podcast, she goes into the growing, cultivation, and fermentation of “specialty” coffee, in addition to the ethnobotany and historical relationship humans have had with plants. It’s an enlightening listen that truly makes you think about where the cup of coffee you drink every morning actually comes from. What is its journey from soil to cup? Who influences that journey? My favorite episodes are the ones where she interviews real farmers. It’s a perspective to at is sorely lacking from “specialty” coffee discourse despite, in my opinion, being the most important one. If you are remotely interested in coffee, I think gaining an understanding of where it comes from and the lives and struggles of the people producing it is vital. It can get pretty technical at times, but Lucia is very good at still making it approachable and digestible. If you’re looking for some listening for runs or drives, give this one a shot!
