Beautiful and terrifying. Kind of a fable about encountering and escaping from the relentless evils of the world. Shockingly dark for its time but has incredibly haunting and beautiful images (river sequence, underwater scene)

“Gorgeous, harrowing and knockout performances and direction from all involved. It’s such a shame we didn’t get more from Charles Laughton, but this one is so far and above, we didn’t need any more.”
