Go down to Mexico: Not kidding. I've spent the majority of my time in Mexico over the past four years, and I have my local tailor that I go to to mend/alter all of my clothes, put together weird upcycled ideas I have, etc. It may be more expensive in the north of the country in TJ than further south, but the point is more that tailors, cobblers, and these kinds of professions to upkeep and maintain goods are alive and well in MX, while it can be so hard to find those same services in the U.S. anymore. I don't know why more people don't bring down stuff they need to get mended/fixed on vacation, and bring it all back brand new.
