About 8 gay men in Kingston, Jamaica in 1988 who are brutally attacked (one murdered) by a mob — that’s as simple as I can come up with for an epic like this. It’s about Jamaica, queerness, straightness, literature itself, sex, violence, trauma, family, “character,” race, identity, being alive, survival. Sections of the book take the form of diaries, dialogue, letters, first person, and second-person narration - Marlon James pulled them all off. The characters are now realer to me than some people I know.
