Wedged between corporate towers near South Coast Plaza, Isamu Noguchi’s 1.6-acre garden distills California’s terrain into six elements, anchored by “The Spirit of the Lima Bean,” 15 interlocking granite boulders honoring the lima bean fields that were once farmed here.
The Philosophical Research Society
The Philosophical Research Society has been LA’s unofficial temple of esoterica since 1934, founded by mystic Manly P. Hall as a shrine to his vast collection of texts. The building itself is a Mayan Revival gem designed by Robert Stacy-Judd, now a designated Historic-Cultural Monument. The bookstore has an incredible selection of titles and tarot decks. Elvis was reportedly a fan and once sent Priscilla there on a fact-finding mission.
