Yoko Ono at The Broad
Yoko Ono’s art takes many forms. Some of my favorites are the ones that instruct, like this piece, where we’re confronted with the timelessness of a tuna sandwich. On view at the Broad thru October 11.
Alexis Smith at Francois Ghebaly
Alexis Smith is one of the unsung heroes of the LA art world. Her installation ‘Rapido,’ a toy train set traveling endlessly around the perimeter of an otherwise empty gallery, is unusually sparse for her. You can’t help but feel the wistful melancholy in Smith’s work as you crouch down to track the train, suddenly a giant looming over an abandoned, post-apocalyptic village. The work dates to 1975, when it was first exhibited at UC Santa Barbara’s Art Gallery. On view at Francois Ghebaly thru September 4.
The Philosophical Research Society
The Philosophical Research Society has been LA’s unofficial temple of esoterica since 1934, founded by mystic Manly P. Hall as a shrine to his vast collection of texts. The building itself is a Mayan Revival gem designed by Robert Stacy-Judd, now a designated Historic-Cultural Monument. The bookstore has an incredible selection of titles and tarot decks. Elvis was reportedly a fan and once sent Priscilla there on a fact-finding mission.
