the tainted cup

Newly enamored with this author. He got me with the line about the French drain in his bio.

this book is a well executed mash up of fantasy and detective novel styles. The fantasy world is amazing and details of it are revealed in tandem with the details of the crime. The investigator and her assistant are likable and occasionally create laughs. It’s great. Reading City of Stairs now.

This book has such a fun cool magic system!! I do think it’s a little heavy handed such that it spoiled it’s own “twists” but it was a still very enjoyable read

“My favorite sci-fi series being written right now. It’s basically like if Sherlock + Holmes solved murders in a high fantasy world that’s constantly attacked by monstrous leviathans. Incredible world-building, well plotted mysteries, and some body horror :) It rules!”
