Tie dyed socks: This has become a tradition and from 5 onward, the birthday boy loves doing it with me. I buy multi-packs of white 100% cotton socks and spend the afternoon tie dying. Wash and match them up the next morning and then have a big basket for kids to choose from after the festivities. They are, understandably, referred to as party socks and I love seeing his buddies wear them.

One nice(r) item: I try to tie the “one nice(r) item” to the theme or even part of the party. For my kids 6th bday next month the kids will be making their own pizzas and so each kid is getting a chef hat and apron. We are only inviting six friends so it’s doable cost wise. I’m also planning to embroider each kids name on each hat cause I like to make life more complicated than necessary.

There's so much different kinds of them, and kids can spend hours just looking at them, learn their names and where & how they come from - and it's like having a little treasure.

And it opens new doors of activities : visit a mineralogical museum, books on geology, stones hunting on the beach...

I was gifted some at 10, and still remember all my stones, so I love to share down these precious time to the next generation.
