We started sleeping in a tent in the backyard with our kids when they were really little as a way to get them used to camping. They got to figure out all the quirks—like clambering out of the tent to nature pee in the dark and adjusting to all the night noises—in a low stakes way. It’s also a nice way to figure out what they need to feel cozy that you might not have thought to pack otherwise (eyemask or buff for bright mornings, extra layers for cold sleepers etc).

This works really well. Try to do a practice round when the weather is awful, too. You'll learn how waterproof your set-up is, as well as how to dry out your gear.
