postbougie the podcast, episode #38: Race Is Always The Issue (2015)

Before Gene Demby had Code Switch, he had another podcast— postbougie. I loved the guest and story choices and honestly miss the energy of it. This is the episode that introduced me to the brilliance of Tressie McMillan Cottom. Will never forget it. They start with her essay in the Atlantic - Race Is Always The Issue - that revisits the Moynihan Report (The Negro Family: The Case for National Action) at its 50th Anniversary. Critical, intellectual, sociological, incisive. I love hearing how they handle black shared images/constructs. Now looking back, it also feels like a snapshot of a key internet time: seasoned black writers/thinkers who gained visibility from internet spaces like Black Planet/(Black) Twitter were also bringing light to so many critical social convos that many of us were unused to seeing handled with such intellectual credibility and care in such a public sphere.
