(Yes, it was that or whatever Game Show Network was airing that morning, so probably The $10,000 Pyramid or Press Your Luck...nowhammiesnowhammiesnowhammies.)

I’m very torn on this. As a young kid my grandma did not have cable so options were pretty limited during daytime. PBS daytime kids programming was more toddler oriented so naturally I tried to find something else and then stumbled on TPIR with its glitzy array of flashing lights, exciting sounds, and people going absolutely crazy. Of course I’m gonna watch it even if I didn’t totally understand everything that was happening. I looked forward to it every day and without fail the best moment of every morning was when someone got to play Plinko and the absolute worst part of every morning was when it was over and the Young and the Restless would immediately follow signaling to me that TV time was over.

(Continued) I loved it all but as an adult I realize now that TPIR is basically an hour-long infomercial where companies paid to have their products featured as a sort of advertising/product placement situation. I don’t think they intended for kids to watch and then beg parents for Dawn dish soap, a Hamilton Beach deluxe hand mixer, or a brand new Ford Festiva! The same goes for Supermarket Sweep. I’m probably overthinking that these shows fueled today’s consumerist appetite but in the end I like to think the lasting memory of Bob Barker’s voice over breakfast at my grandma’s house is one that always brings me eternal comfort and made it all worth it.
