I noticed a small note on a website when I was purchasing tulip bulbs “not pre chilled”. I paused and realized I was missing something. A quick search uncovered I should have been chilling some of my bulbs before planting them!!! This explained why I’ve had just a weird experience with bulbs. At the garden store I talked to the help desk and they told me I should also soak them in water and fertilizer for 24 hours before planting.

Hi! Bulb nerd and Master Gardener here to say this only applies to areas that do not experience prolonged periods of cold temps (sub 40°F) in winter, such as California and areas of the southern US. For folks reading this rec that live in more continental climates, (typically zones 7 and above), you should be fine to proceed without chilling!
