The Siege of Krishnapur

An exemplar of my new favorite entertainment genre 'Colonial Schadenfreude'. A delightful chronicle of the brits cracking under pressure in 1800s India. J.G. Farrell captures the interiority of the besieged characters with a wit that oscillates between ruthlessness and humanity- If, like me, you love to read Norman Rush this should be a joy. Plus it was a rec from Adam Curtis' newest video essay 'Shifty', and seconded by my Mom. Can't wait to read the other two novels in his trilogy on colonialism.

This trilogy is fantastic! Also excellent in the colonial schadenfreude genre: Paul Scott's epic Raj Quartet.

Oh so exciting I will definitely order them ! Just also finished watching The Terror - a series very much in the genre about an arctic exploration gone wrong
