Taken from New Order's 2001 album Get Ready, "Crystal" is a track that sticks with you as soon as you hear it. While released 20 years after New Order became New Order post Joy Division, it feels significantly different and more modern than their previous offerings. It has a driving beat and, no pun intended, killer Peter Hook bassline, that is so signature to New Order and Joy Division before it.
"Crystal" also is important to me for a very specific reason: its music video. Featuring an actor I like to think was very inspired by Primal Scream's Bobby Gillespie, the video shows not New Order performing, but a pretend band called The Killers (see kick drum). Perhaps my favorite music fact of all time is that Brandon Flowers, founder and frontman of another all-time favorite group of mine, THE Killers. Brandon Flowers and The Killers' music, specifically their earlier, synth heavy tunes, are very inspired by New Order, and New Order frontman is one of Flowers's heroes.
I can't remember when I first learned this fun little trivia fact, but it's really my favorite thing.
Another favorite off of Get Ready is "Slow Jam." Also perfect is the stark black and white photography by Factory Records and graphic design icon Peter Saville. I'd much like to have it all framed.
