The Eames Institute Museum will open in 2030 in Marin County, CA (my hometown). The building will be converted from the long-abandoned Birkenstock campus in Novato under the architectural direction of Herzog & de Meuron from Basel, Switzerland. The firm also has an intriguing collection of objects.
It will be the new home for the archives of Ray and Charles Eames: art, furniture, early prototypes, and anecdotes from the design process. The archives are currently housed over the Bay Bridge in Richmond at the New Eames Archives, available for public tours and viewings if you can't wait until 2030.
I am so, so very excited about this. After growing up with the persistent rumour that the Birkenstock campus would someday be demolished, I cannot think of a better way to preserve its architectural integrity, inside and out.
