10 Rules for Students and Teachers

Phenomenal advice. My dad sent me these rules when I went off to art school and I always had them pinned to my studio wall. I returned to them for the first time in a long time earlier this month while thinking about what I need creatively and how I want to be spending my time. Enjoy yourself. It is lighter than you think!

For a long time, I’d known these as John Cage’s 10 Rules, but as it turns out only the 10th one is actually his, he just popularized the whole thing! The rest were developed by students of artist Corita Kent (she should get her own rec) in the 60s, when she asked them to reimagine what a learning environment could be.

I also came across audio of Ed Ruscha reading Rule #1, which is kind of everything to me. Ultimate teacher.
