Begin with firm boundaries: good leash skills (at your hip, no pulling), basic obedience, no human food (therefore no begging), no going on furniture (I love a crate-trained dog!). A good routine with lots of exercise makes for a calm and fulfilled dog. You can always relax your rules once you have a good foundation, but starting with firm rules really helps in your training. Look up the the 3-3-3 rule for rescues. Best decision ever and congrats!
