Ahhh don’t apologise, i feel very seen! The moral perfectionism re. academia is so uncanny because that’s exactly what i’ve been struggling with—to the point where i’ve incorporated it into my dissertation. Breaking things down into smaller, more consistent chunks always feels like sabotage when i’m hyper-focussed/in a flow state, but i’m realising i’ll often be hyper focused and…stuck lol. I think breaking things up is a great disruptor/reality check moment for times like that. And i love that rule for your writing. It’s something I wholeheartedly agree with, even if my actions tend not to match. I appreciate the thought you’ve put into this, and thank you for sharing your own journey. In case you haven’t heard it in a while: you’ve come a long way, and you’ve grown so much 🖤

Oh that’s so lovely thank you 💜💜💜 I really hear you on the hyper focusing. I do that too and definitely want to capitalize on it when I can. Something you can do is be like I’m gonna work on this for an hour and then if I’m feeling like I want to keep going I can extend. But also maybe set a timer so it doesn’t get out of hand? When I was in essay deadline mode the other week, I was definitely working as long as I could stand it. But I think chronic illness does me a favor in a way bc it’s kind of my body setting these very strong limits for me. But yes, I do think being like, I don’t work past x time of night or I never work more than x hours at once might be a good way to rein in the hyperfocused/stuck combo. I have thought so much about how intense a dissertation would be for my kinda brain — I really admire you doing it and bet it is really hard!! But also, it sounds like you’re moving through it (and letting the challenges inspire you, which, not to be corny, is pretty cool)

It’s been a journey, let me just say that hahaha. Not but really, it’s been the most challenging thing i’ve ever done because i’ve learned so much about myself along the way. I’m grateful to be working on a project i’m passionate about because its given me that self-reflexive freedom (and also my supervisor is an angel in human form whose support cannot be understated 🙌🏽)
