The Venice Biennial: You have a most wonderful treat this year. The Venice Biennale. It’s essentially the Olympics of Art. Artist delegates from all over the world submit their art (often immersive installations) as representatives from their country. Judging is early in May I think, and viewing is available from May to November. Your ou can walk among multiple buildings on multiple islands over days to experience as much as you want to. It’s been a few years since I’ve been, but as I recall it’s all free to experience.

Museo Fortuny: Venice: We wandered in here on a whim while roaming the narrow streets of Venice and were beguiled. It is the one-time live-work space of Mariano Fortuny and his creative partner and wife, Henriette Nigrin, and just his library/wunderkammer alone is worth the price of admission--tables strewn with cyanotypes, inspirational clippings bound by theme in great big scrapbooks covered with Fortuny fabrics. Besides the fabrics, he designed theatrical sets and innovative lighting tools to cast cloud patterns and shimmering moons on stage, and with Henriette, he created the fabulous pleated column dresses still associated with the Fortuny name (they have several on display + this is a picture of Henriette in one of the gowns). Worth visiting if you like artfully decayed palazzos, richly patterned hanging lanterns, silk tassels, ephemera, theatrical models, old photographs, fabulous sofas strewn with cushions, and artist studios.

Fondazione Querini Stampalia: Venice: A truly singular merging of the old and new. The last  count of the Querini Stanpalia family left their house, library + collections to the public good in 1869; the space was later reimagined/augmented by Carlo Scarpa. So now you can wander through, admiring Scarpa's geometric flourishes alongside rare old works, like a ancient gem presented in a modern case. Also has a cafe, tempting library, and zine shop, plus an array of invitingly slouchy couches (see photo, ha!) and a exquisite tiny garden with a lovely little fountain.
