LA HIDDEN GEMS
Chili John’s in Burbank
•••
Chili John’s is one of the oldest restaurants in Los Angeles and is largely slept on, which makes it an amazing place to read or write, chat with intergenerational locals and eat “seed oil free, no nitrates or color added” food but also makes it, now, AT RISK OF CLOSING and have started a go fund me to stay in business. So GO!

Highly Likely - Highland Park
•••
i do love sitting at the bar and working here [food is eh]. they did a great job designing the space, barstools are actually comfortable and the people who flow through are young / queer if that's your beat. right in the heart of highland park too so if you wanna skip out for a walk or knock out a yoga class at kinship then walk a block over to highly after, it's a great 1-2 punch. Comet Over Delphi is an honorable mention but a bit more of a scene. Little Ripper is also a hidden gem for daytime work! if you reaaaaaallllly wanna lock in, Meadow is a great co-working space with passes on the east side.

bricks & scones
•••
For a certain type of atmosphere, Bricks & Scones is ideal. The inside (especially upstairs) is all dark wood, cozy corners, and squashy seating. Like the opposite of an Apple Store-type environment. Quality of food/drinks is mediocre, but it’s quiet and enables intense focus. You will never feel bad for staying for hours!

Creature's Plants & Coffee
•••
Outdoor oasis that’s both a coffee shop and plant shop. Very peaceful. Lots of tables. I haven’t worked there specifically, but ever time I get coffee there and shop for plants hella people are cruising away on their laptops.

Granada

It boggles my mind that this sort of thing had ever been outlawed. The owners took “turning your house into a part time coffee shop” and pulled it off with exceptional aplomb. If you want a place that is inherently designed to be nestled into, and can make the hours, this is the place to go. Just be sure to clean up after yourself — it is their home after all

Way bigger than it looks from the outside, big time laptop culture, exceptional coffee program, solid food, moody lighting. If it had outdoor space it would be unstoppable.
