This Newbury Honor series was written in 1948 (!) but is still completely magical for bigs and littles alike. A clever boy sneaks away from home to adventure through a fabulous world of talking dragons, monkeys, lions, canaries and other fantastical creatures. Featuring multiple ingenious rescues involving charmingly ordinary props from our hero's backpack. My son's favorite.
