This is a masterpiece of American biography. This is my peak dad book club vibes.
Did I read all of them in a year? Yes! Am I excited for the final volume? Absolutely! If you don’t want to spend every night for a year combing over the juicy senatorial and campaign trail details of an awful man and those around him, at least read the chapters in the first volume about Texas Hill country. It’s a stunning portrait of American Western history, grit, petulance and perseverance, and a meditation on family trauma passed through generations.
I’ve already rec’ed the Power Broker and this is essentially me doing that again. Robert A Caro is a writer who will make you care about the boring bits by connecting them to the rest of the world in the most interesting ways. Love him!
